Russell Martin provides ‘touch and go’ Southampton injury update ahead of Leicester City clash

The latest Leicester City news as the Southampton boss has provided an update on defender Jan Bednarek ahead of City’s visit to St Mary’s.

Southampton boss Russell Martin has said that defender Jan Bednarek will be ‘touch and go’ for the clash against Leicester City, after picking up an injury while on international duty.

City travel to St Mary’s on Friday night for what is a clash between two of the Championship’s promotion favourites. Both teams will be looking to bounce back from defeat before the international break. City fell to a 1-0 defeat against Hull City, while Southampton were beaten 5-0 vs Sunderland.

Both teams had players away on international duty over the two week break. While City’s internationals seem to have come back with a clean bill of health, it’s not the same for Southampton.

Defender Bednarek was taken off in the first half of Poland’s 2-0 defeat against Albania on Sunday with an injury. The centre-back has played every minute in the Championship for the Saints this season but is now a doubt for the clash vs City.

“Janny B is going to be touch and go really,” Martin said in his pre-match press conference via HampshireLive. “It’s nothing too serious but we hope that he can be involved tomorrow and we have a feeling he can be.

“Ideally he would have played a few less minutes but he’s the captain and they want him on the pitch for 90 minutes so it is what it is. We have options, so whether Janny makes it or not, we’ll be well prepared.”
