Ryan Lowe makes Plymouth Argyle prediction for Championship this season
The Preston North End manager has spoken about Steven Schumacher and Pilgrims on the latest Official EFL Podcast
Ryan Lowe is supporting Steven Schumacher from afar as his former assistant manager leads Plymouth Argyle in the Championship this season after their League One title success in 2022/23.
The Pilgrims are 10th in the Championship, with seven points from their first five games, as the first two-week international break of the campaign takes place.
Argyle will return to action next Saturday, and that will be against Lowe’s table-topping Preston North End at Deepdale.
he former Argyle manager has guided unbeaten Preston to pole position in the Championship with 13 points from their opening five fixtures.
Lowe was a guest on the latest Official EFL Podcast, co-hosted by Sky Sports’ pair David Prutton and David Stowell, and predicted Argyle would continue to be very competitive in the second tier of English football.
He said: “I woke up the other morning and I thought ‘Next game is Plymouth Argyle, make sure we are ready for that!
“I spoke to Schuey on Sunday, it was his lad Vincent’s birthday and wished him all the best. I think he was getting away. That’s it now, there will be no contact until the Saturday when we play each other.
“As far as Schuey goes, he has done unbelievable. Did I see that in him? Yeah, of course. He was a top assistant manager and a top coach, and he has took the club to a different level.
“They are going to want to come and showcase what they can do. They have been fantastic, I have watched a lot of the games already because I’m supporting Schuey when we are not playing them.
“They are going to be a tough team to beat as you have seen already and they will win games of football. A lot of people may have had them down to be relegated, not a chance, I see them finishing minimum mid-table because they are a good little outfit.”
He added: “Schuey is still one of my best mates and always will be, he’s a fantastic coach.”
Preston drew 1-1 at Bristol City on the opening day of the campaign and since then have won against Sunderland (2-1 at home), Sheffield Wednesday (1-0 away), Swansea City (2-1 at home) and Stoke City (2-0 away).
Lowe, who left Argyle to take over at Preston in December 2021, said: “We have had an unbelievable start, a start that you can only imagine, especially with the tough games we have had.
“To be top of the league before the international break why wouldn’t you enjoy it? You have got to enjoy it while you can, you might stay there, you might not, you might drop down, wherever it may take you.
“When you have been as it stands on 13 points and you are top of the division why wouldn’t you enjoy it?
“I said to all of our lads before we had a little bit of a break ‘Go and enjoy it, being top of the league for the international break, but when we get back it gets harder.
“A lot of teams will want be ‘These are top of the league’. Whether people will look at us to be there or not, it doesn’t really matter. We are there because we have worked our socks off to get there.”
