Brown, aged 25, has been a fixture in the Stoke starting line-up since joining from Barnsley in 2020 and, having finished as top scorer under Michael O’Neill in 2021, found form as a right-sided forward under Alex Neil last season.

The manager told StokeonTrentLive after last night’s win: “We’re playing 105, 110 minutes in every game so it’s difficult. I thought you could see tonight that we were running on empty towards the end.

“I know we’ve done a lot of business but tonight I’ve put on DJ (Daniel Johnson) wide right and he’s not a wide right, right? You can see we’re still short in certain areas of the pitch at the moment.”

When asked if he was close to bringing anyone in, he said: “Yeah but I’m not sure how close. There’s one that could potentially happen in the next day or so or it could happen over the next week or so.

“We’ll still be bringing bodies into the club to help us.”

Josh Onomah has been at Stoke on trial and impressing coaches, having featured in a couple of pre-season friendlies.

Neil was asked if he could be one of the players and said: “He may well be but you know I’m not going to give you any names.”

Stoke also want Basel midfielder Wouter Burger and Colchester right-back Junior Tchamadeu.
