Sunderland injury news as star men missing ahead of Championship game at Coventry City
Sunderland face Coventry City this weekend at the CBS Arena and boss Tony Mowbray will be without a number of first-teamers through injury. The Black Cats’ absentees include long-term casualties such as Ross Stewart and Corry Evans, who have been out for many months, and players who have picked up more minor problems in recent weeks such as Patrick Roberts and ager s Rigg Chris
Some of those could be on the verge of a return for the trip to Coventry, while others will be missing for a number of weeks – or even months – yet. Two of those on the injury list are summer signings, and Sunderland fans have barely seen Dutch defender Jenson Seelt in action, and have yet to see anything of Spanish striker Eliezer Mayenda.
Mowbray gives an injury update before every game and here ChronicleLive has pulled together the latest information we have on the situations of the players who are currently in the treatment room at the Academy of Light.

Patrick Roberts
Roberts limped off 13 minutes from time in last Saturday’s 2-1 win against Rotherham United at the Stadium of Light. Afterwards, Mowbray said he did not yet know the nature or severity of the 26-year-old’s injury, although he added that the fact Roberts had been allowed to go home rather than receive lengthy treatment at the ground gave him cause for optimism. “I don’t know anything yet,” Mowbray said of Roberts’ condition straight after the game. “We’ll see how he is tomorrow [Sunday].
“What we do know is that the physio department has sent him home, he’s not lying on a bed with a big chunk of ice on him, or going off to hospital in an ambulance. He’ll be in for treatment tomorrow, he’ll be assessed and if it’s a hamstring strain or whatever we’ll get a scan and we’ll see what we think.”
Mowbray is expected to give an update on Roberts’ injury on Thursday lunctime.

Chris Rigg
Rigg missed Sunderland’s win against Rotherham after suffering concussion in a clash of heads while playing for the U21s against Norwich City at Eppleton the previous Monday. The 16-year-old must follow the FA’s concussion protocols which meant he could not play against the Millers but, if his recovery has gone without a hitch, he could rejoin training at the end of this week and potentially he could be available against Coventry – although whether he would be rushed straight back is open to question. Speaking before the game against Rotherham, Mowbray said: “Rigg has got concussion from the game with the U21s, so he won’t be involved.”

Elliot Embleton
Embleton has been out of action since breaking his ankle and suffering ligament damage in Sunderland’s 1-1 draw at Hull City in December. He underwent an operation soon after the injury, and had a second round of surgery in July to remove the metal plate that been inserted into his ankle.
Mowbray said last week that the 24-year-old had been taking part in the warm-up sessions with the first-team, although he had yet to return to full training – with that next step possibly coming either this week or next.
