Aaron Ramsey picks out Tottenham’s next big star but admits transfer regret
Tottenham news – Former Arsenal icon Aaron Ramsey has backed Brennan Johnson to be a star following his move to Tottenham.
Former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey was full of praise when talking about international teammate Brennan Johnson, but wishes he hadn’t joined Tottenham in the summer transfer window.
It comes after the Wales international made the switch from Nottingham Forest on transfer deadline day, rounding up the business for Spurs as part of a large rebuild. The fee paid was believed to be upwards of £45million for the 22-year-old, bolstering Ange Postecoglou’s forward lines.
Johnson’s rise to the top saw him climb through the ranks of the academy at Forest, as well as a loan switch, before helping his side reach the Premier League in his breakout campaign. The following season was another impressive showing as the forward scored eight and assisted three in his debut season in the top flight.
There was interest from a host of clubs this summer, involving Brentford and Chelsea, however it was Spurs that won the race for his signature. Postecoglou was complimentary of the move, telling the media: “Just another exciting young player. He’s a real threat in the front third and he’s a bit different to what we’ve already got.
“He’s young, ambitious. It’s no secret that that’s been the model for me, not just here but wherever I’ve gone. It’s just as much about the person you’re bringing in as the footballer. Looking at him, he’s going to fit in really well with this group because he’s really ambitious and hungry and he wants to take his game to another level. The technical and the physical attributes he has I think he should fit in really well with us.”
While it remains to be seen how the move goes, Wales teammate Ramsey has backed Johnson to impress, but wishes he hadn’t gone to Tottenham due to his own Arsenal ties. He told the press on Monday: “I wish it weren’t to Tottenham [laughs]. No I think from his point of view, it’s a brilliant move for him.
“The potential that he has is quite scary, so hopefully now he can take them next steps and go to the next level, if you like. So it’s going to be important for Wales as well, it’s going to be huge for us over the next whatever years there is, but we’re all excited and hopefully now he has another platform to go on and improve himself again.”
