The New York Jets are reportedly considering bringing back Zach Wilson to start after his recent demotion failed to spark the team’s listless offense. However, the former second-overall pick may be having reservations about a return.

According to The Athletic, sources say the Jets are looking to promote Wilson, but he is reluctant to return to the starting role after struggling over the season’s first 10 weeks. The Jets remain hopeful that Wilson will change his mind, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt.

Wilson was benched following the team’s November 19 defeat to Buffalo, but has continued to struggle with quarterbacks Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian under center. Both Boyle and Siemian played in Sunday’s loss to the visiting Atlanta Falcons as the Jets fell to 4-8 on the season.

The third-year quarterback has notoriously struggled since replacing four-time MVP Aaron Rogers in Week 1, when the former Super Bowl winner went down with a torn Achilles. Although Rodgers continues to progress in his rehab, he previously said he won’t try to return in 2023 unless the Jets were in playoff contention, which no longer seems to be the case.

For the season, Wilson is 3-6 as a start, while competing just 59.2 percent of his passes for 1,944 yards, six touchdowns and seven picks.

And things didn’t get any better for the Jets quarterbacks on Sunday.

Siemian replaced a benched Boyle in the fourth quarter of the Jets’ latest lousy loss, dropping a 13-8 decision to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

‘As an offense, we work our tail off during practice,’ running back Dalvin Cook said. ‘You get looks, we do things in practice and you expect for it to translate to the game, and we’re just not having that translation right now.

‘So, it’s frustrating.’

And the Jets aren’t sure who’ll start at quarterback next Sunday against the Houston Texans.

‘I’m not there yet,’ coach Robert Saleh said shortly after the game.

Wilson started the first nine games after the opener, but struggled mightily and was demoted to the emergency No. 3 quarterback.

‘He’s always in consideration,’ Saleh said when asked if Wilson could start next week. ‘To what level, I’m not there yet.’
