The search for new Plymouth Argyle players never ends, says Neil Dewsnip

Planning will soon start for the January transfer window when manager Steven Schumacher will have the chance to make further improvements to his squad

It is the best part of four months before the next transfer window opens in January but the search for new players for Plymouth Argyle never ends, according to director of football Neil Dewsnip.

Key club personnel will continue to have regular meetings between now and then about making further improvements to Steven Schumacher’s squad, in what positions and how they can do that within their financial means.

Argyle head of recruitment Jimmy Dickinson is currently enjoying a well-earned break after 10 signings were made during a hectic summer transfer window

Planning will soon start for January, with the Pilgrims they have the capability of bringing in one more loan signing then if they so wish.

Dewsnip told Plymouth Live: “Jimmy has been sent away on holiday because he has earned the right to one, that’s for sure.

“Steven’s focus will go on the team more than ever right now, which is correct, but we have regular meetings. It never ends.

“The minute Jimmy is back we will be looking at where we believe we could still improve our squad and then how we go about achieving that.”

Argyle have gone into the first of three international breaks before Christmas in a creditable 10th position in the Championship.

They have picked up seven points from five games, and it would have been more than that had they not conceded last-gasp goals in 2-1 defeats at home to Southampton and away to Birmingham City.

On Argyle’s start to the season, Dewsnip said: “I’m very pleased, but careful not to say delighted because you would always like a couple of more points.

“Wouldn’t it have been great if we could have got a point or more at Birmingham? Wouldn’t it have been great if we had defended that corner kick against Southampton at the end?

“Quite rightly the supporters, like I do by the way, will add those points and go ‘We would have been . . .’ but the reality is we are 10th, we have seven points from five games.

“I don’t think there is too many of us who would have said ‘No, that’s not okay’. So I think we are in a really good place.

“The environment from the owner (Simon Hallett) down is incredibly positive. The players are working really hard with the staff to get better.

“Every game is like an event right now. It is amazing to be in the Championship but we are not there just to make the numbers up, to have a nice time and go backwards. We are there to professionally have a good time and to get better.”
