NEWCASTLE TOLD THEY’VE MADE TRANSFER MISTAKE WITH £200,000-A-WEEK PLAYER
Shay Given has said that Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United should have signed Harry Maguire from Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
Newcastle United were linked with Manchester United central defender Harry Maguire.
The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Newcastle were interested in Maguire and could move for the £200,000-a-week (SalarySport) defender depending on injuries.
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given has outlined the reasons why Eddie Howe’s side should have signed the England international.
Maguire is still at Manchester United.
Newcastle United told about Harry Maguire transfer mistake
Given said Sky Sports News on Deadline Day, as transcribed by GBB: “I think the business has been good. Maybe I would have looked at centre-half, if I’m honest.
“The likes of Harry Maguire. Would he have come in and helped them at the back? [Fabian] Schar has had his injury problems, [Sven] Botman is touch and go for this weekend, [Dan] Burn came into the back last weekend of course, so possibly they could have strengthened there.
We believe that Newcastle United should have signed Harry Maguire from Premier League rivals Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United were willing to sell Maguire.
And the defender himself was open to leaving Old Trafford at one stage.
Maguire may have struggled at the Red Devils, but the England international is a very good and experienced defender.
The 30-year-old is at the top of his game at the moment and would have been able to make an immediate impact at Newcastle.
The Magpies are aiming to finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season as well as make an impact in the UEFA Champions League.
