Two Championship Clubs Set To Battle It Out For Former Premier League Defender

Former Reading and Leicester City defender Liam Moore has been a free agent since the summer but is now being linked with a return to the Championship.

At 30, Moore has a wealth of experience in English football, having started out with the Foxes in the Championship, spending some of the early seasons on loan at Brentford in League One and Bradford City in League Two, before moving to Reading later in more recent seasons.

Unfortunately, over the course of the 2022/23 campaign, Moore made merely three appearances for the Royals due to a knee injury which kept him out for the guts of a year while his side were relegated down to the third tier.

At the end of the season, the 30-year-old’s contract was allowed to expire, making Moore a free agent. However, with the transfer window’s conclusion edging closer, a few clubs are getting ready to battle over the centre-back’s signature.

According to FootballTransfers, Championship outfits West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to snap up the Jamaica international.

The Baggies are particularly keen to sign Moore given the ropey start to the season they endured, conceding four goals in two matches.

Football Insider reported yesterday that West Brom are also looking to sign Millwall’s stalwart defender Jake Cooper, although the Lions would need to be compensated in order for a deal to be deal, unlike a pursuit of Moore.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have lost both of their opening games this season, leading head coach Xisco Munoz to search for more reinforcements at the back.

Moore has now fully recovered from the long-term injury which kept him out for the vast majority of last season and could be an excellent pick-up for a Championship side.

Considering the defender can be signed for free too, with the only expenses being wages, it’s a pretty low-risk acquisition and not one to be sniffed at.
