Journalist: Vincent Kompany now plotting ‘last minute’ swoop for £8.6m star after Leeds & Southampton snub

Burnley are plotting a beat the deadline swoop for Leeds United and Southampton target Joseph Paintsil.

That is according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who says Burnley are now in talks with Genk over a deal for Paintsil after their failed pursuit of Mike Tresor.

Burnley had looked all but certain to sign Paintsil’s Genk teammate Tresor until a late development on Wednesday night saw him change his mind on a move to Turf Moor, as per Tavolieri.

As such, they have now switch their attention towards a deal for Paintsil, who had been interesting both Leeds and Southampton in the last week.

Paintsil had been keen to come to Elland Road with Leeds having been in advanced talks over an £8.6 million transfer with Genk, but ultimately were unable to agree a deal.

Leeds’ failure to get a deal over the line came after Southampton’s attempt to sign the 25-year-old also came to nothing.

The Saints had been looking to agree a swap deal that saw Paul Onuachu go the other way to his former side, but neither player gave their green light on a move.

As per the Telegraph last night, a deal with Southampton then looked back on until journalist Ibrahim Sannie Daara reported just hours later it had again collapsed.

Paintsil would’ve represented a significant coup for either Leeds or Saints had they been able to get it over the line, but ultimately it has been a deal worth more hassle than it’s worth.

Burnley will now have to be quick to beat tomorrow’s 11pm deadline to ensure Paintsil makes the move to Turf Moor.
