Watford insider on Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis as Hull City look to wrap up transfer
Hull Live caught up with Andrew French, the Watford correspondent for the Watford Observer, to get the lowdown on Hull City transfer target Keinan Davis
Hull City are working hard on a deal to sign Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis. Several Championship clubs are said to be interested in signing the player.
Premier League newcomers Luton Town have also been linked with a move for the out-of-favour Villa man. But City are believed to be leading the race to sign the powerful frontman.
Davis, who came through the ranks at Villa Park, was a key man in Nottingham Forest’s promotion to the Premier League in 2022. He spent last season on loan at the Tigers’ Championship rivals Watford. But the 25-year-old struggled to make a big impact at Vicarage Road, hitting a meagre seven goals in 34 appearances.
Hull Live caught up with Andrew French, the Watford correspondent for the Watford Observer, to get the inside track on Davis’s time in Hertfordshire.
How would you assess his Watford loan spell?
To be fair to the player, last season was pretty much a disaster for Watford, so anyone who set foot on the pitch was pretty much tainted. Davis had a mixed time of it, some very good games, some anonymous games and – like a lot of the Watford last term – spent a period out of action with injury.
What type of forward is he?
He’s very much a target man who holds the ball up, links things together and brings others into the move.
What are his strengths? Any weaknesses?
He’s excellent at holding the ball up, even under pressure. Get him running at the defence and he’s ha
He just didn’t do enough of it often enough, and a return of seven goals from 34 league games (27 as a starter) wasn’t high. He did score the first goal in the 4-0 home derby win against Luton, so he’s in the fans’ good books for that for a while yet!
Do you think he will be a good signing for City?
It will all depend on how you play, and if that fits into the strengths mentioned. Obviously it’s unlikely you’re signing him if he doesn’t, but he certainly needs to be played in a particular way to get the best out of him. Also hopefully he isn’t so troubled by injury.
Is there anything else City fans need to know about him?
There’s a good player in there – he showed it at Forest the season before, he showed glimpses of it at Watford. He was good enough to be plucked out of non-league by Villa.
