West Ham make first move to sign Rangers-linked defender

Rangers moving for Ronnie Edwards looks unlikely and West Ham United are now pushing to sign the Peterborough United defender.

Rangers fans were a little confused when links to Edwards emerged earlier this month.

BBC Sport reported that Rangers were looking to bring Edwards to Ibrox but faced a battle with Bournemouth and West Ham United.

The rumour seemed a little odd; Rangers already have a number of right-footed centre backs at Michael Beale’s disposal.

Connor Goldson, John Souttar and Leon Balogun all fit that bill whilst Rangers already have a young talent in Leon King.

A left-footer would make much more sense, so the links to Edwards seemed a little strange.

Peterborough chief Barry Fry then suggested that Rangers couldn’t afford to sign Edwards even if Beale did want him.

We’re certainly not expecting to see Edwards arrive at Ibrox before Friday’s deadline, but he could be on the move elsewhere.

West Ham United make their move for Ronnie Edwards

Sky Sports report that West Ham United have now made an ‘initial approach’ to sign Edwards.

David Moyes seems keen to bring Edwards down to the London Stadium and is now racing to get a deal done before the window slams shut.

It’s unclear just how much West Ham would be paying, but for Fry to claim that Rangers can’t afford him, it will surely be a deal worth up to eight figures.

Edwards may not quite be ready for Premier League action just yet and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to West Ham sign him and loan him straight back to Peterborough.

The 20-year-old has shown enormous potential, with Posh boss Darren Ferguson has previously hailing Edwards as an ‘incredible talent’.

Maybe Rangers will keep tabs on Edwards moving forward with eye awards a potential future move but this is one rumour which will seemingly end in the coming days.
