Texas Rangers Finalize 2023 MLB Opening Day Roster - Sports Illustrated Texas Rangers News, Analysis and More

Former Ranger Martinez to Reds, per reports

Nick Martinez and the Cincinnati Reds have reportedly agreed to terms on a free agent deal

The Cincinnati Reds and free agent pitcher Nick Martinez have agreed to terms on a deal, per reports. The deal is reportedly 2 years, $26 million with an opt out after the first year.

Martinez, you may recall, is a former Ranger, spending parts of four seasons in the majors with Texas from 2014-17. Martinez then went to Japan and had success there before returning to the United States in 2022. He has pitched for the San Diego Padres the past two seasons, putting up a 3.45 ERA in 216 innings while splitting his time between the rotation and the bullpen. The Reds are apparently going to look at him this spring as a starter.

Martinez opted out of his Padres contract, which would have paid him $16 million over the next two seasons, and that obviously was the correct choice, as he has gotten $10 million more guaranteed in this deal, with the possibility of re-entering the free agent market after the 2024 season.
