‘Wonderful’ player that Moore hardly picked now on fire after Sheffield Wednesday exit
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru had every right to walk away from Sheffield Wednesday. Now, the Owls’ loss is Hatayspor’s gain, with the winger on fire for his new club.
Dele-Bashiru was always going to be frustrated with how last season panned out. He scored twice on the opening day of 2022/23 but constantly faced a battle to impress Darren Moore.
He only actually started 12 times for Wednesday in League One last season. That does seem a lot for a player who was called ‘wonderful’ by the now departed promotion-winning boss.
The fact that Wednesday went up will help Moore justify his selection. However, his decision to often leave him on the bench, or sometimes out of the squad, certainly didn’t help when contract talks came around.
Dele-Bashiru told Wednesday where to stick it. He obviously won’t have worded it quite so emphatically but he was never going to put pen to paper on a new contract.
Hatayspor are still trying to suss out where the 22-year-old can feature at his best. They’ve played him in central midfield three times and also played him on the left wing.
It’s going well though. He’s already found the net on three occasions and Volkan Demiral has started him in all four of their league fixtures this season.
Dele-Bashiru was right to walk away from Wednesday and club could regret it
The youngster has the sort of energy that could see him thrive in Xisco Munoz’s style of play. That is all hindsight but it’s easy to see why he left Hillsborough in the summer.
Some might point to the fact that Dele-Bashiru didn’t always hit the mark for Wednesday. Ultimately though it must have been hard for him to keep his confidence high when the manager clearly didn’t fancy him.
Wednesday are yet to win this season in the Championship. Meanwhile, Dele-Bashiru continues to star and under a manager who fancies him, he could really kick on this season and show Wednesday what they’re missing.
