World Cup winner heading to Nottingham Forest for bargain fee as Fulham lose out
It wasn’t too long ago Gonzalo Montiel was scoring the winning penalty of the World Cup, and the Argentina star now looks set to join Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest look set to land World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel for a cut-price.
Montiel was the man who gifted Lionel Messi his first World Cup triumph, with the full-back stroking the ball home with the decisive penalty. The Argentine then repeated his spot-kick feat in the final of the Europa League with Sevilla.
And, proving he hasn’t lost his touch, Montiel converted from the spot in the UEFA Super Cup against Manchester City last week. However, the 26-year-old is now on his way out of Sevilla, and Forest look set to land the full-back.
Montiel has fallen out of favour at Sevilla – who are now struggling towards the bottom of La Liga. The Europa League winners are yet to win any of their Spanish top-flight games this season.
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the deal has now been completed, he tweeted: “Gonzalo Montiel to Nottingham Forest, here we go – deal confirmed. Medical has been completed.”
Montiel has already been linked with Fulham, among other sides, but he appears to have chosen Forest – for £9.5million.
