Xisco Munoz drops hint over future Sheffield Wednesday formation amid tactics switch-up

The Owls have mixed and matched when it comes to their choice of formation this season

Xisco Munoz, the Sheffield Wednesday manager, has given a possible hint over future formation set-ups.

The Owls started the campaign under their new manager by reverting to four at the back. It was the formation they went with in their opening three Championship matches but saw them lose all three, conceding seven goals in the process.

But in the most recent league outings, against Cardiff City and Leeds United, Munoz switched it up and moved to a system incorporating three centre-halves and two wing-backs. It has led to some improvement against Cardiff where they were narrowly beaten only due to a last-minute penalty.

But against Leeds the side defended resolutely thanks to a disciplined performance. It resulted in the team achieving its maiden clean sheet of the season.

When asked by Yorkshire Live if the 3-4-2-1 set-up will be adopted going forward, Munoz said: “We need some balance and I think we find a better balance with five (at the back). Maybe we will continue with this, maybe not.

“We will see the next game. As I’ve said before, the team has to (respond) to different situations but it’s true that in a short time we’ve arrived at a solid performance regarding this formation.”

With the Owls now in the midst of an international break, it offers Munoz a chance to sit back and assess the opening clutch of games before preparing for the restart at home to Ipswich on September 16.

“We’ve spoken a lot about the consistency needed and clean sheets and starting a game at one level and staying there. We need to continue the same and right now we have two weeks and during this time we need to work very hard. We need to have analysis but every day I can tell you this team is getting better.”
