Packers poach Patriots RB from practice squad
Bill Belichick’s running back depth took an unexpected hit on Monday afternoon.
The Packers signed Patrick Taylor off New England’s practice squad following a pair of injuries to their backs. Aaron Jones (knee) and Emanuel Wilson (shoulder) were both banged up in Green Bay’s win over the Chargers on Sunday, and Taylor has already spent plenty of time at Lambeau Field.
“I don’t think (Jones’ injury) is long-term,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said after the game. “It certainly looked bad. I was really concerned. Just seeing it live, I didn’t see a replay or anything, but seeing it live, it did not look good. But he’s in good spirits in there, so hopefully it’s a short-term thing.”
Taylor spent parts of four seasons in Green Bay from 2020-2023, but was cut in October and landed on New England’s practice squad. Though he was in Foxborough for over a month, he was never elevated to Belichick’s game-day roster. Now, he’ll return to a team with a far greater need at the position.
Meanwhile in New England, it’ll be interesting to see how the team’s running back situation shakes out after claiming JaMycal Hasty off waivers last week. Rhamondre Stevenson and Zeke Elliott are entrenched in the top two spots, but Hasty could give Ty Montgomery a run for his money. In 10 games this season, Montgomery has just two carries and four receptions — he’s failed to make an impact on offense — and Hasty also boasts kickoff return experience.
