‘I KNOW PEOPLE’: TOTTENHAM TOLD £85K-WEEK STAR COULD PLAY MIDFIELD FOR FIRST TIME IN 3 YEARS
Alasdair Gold has suggested that frozen-out Tottenham star Eric Dier could return to playing as a ‘number six’.
The 29-year-old has fallen out of favour under Ange Postecoglou this season and he hasn’t been seen in Tottenham colours since the final game of pre-season against Barcelona.
But Football London journalist Gold did suggest that Eric Dier, who has played in midfield, right-back and centre-back during his days at Spurs, could possibly be used in the middle of the park again, as he told his own YouTube channel.
The last time Dier was used in midfield was against Aston Villa in 2020, and since then, he has played at centre-back and, according to many of his own fans, not in a great way.
There is no doubt that the 29-year-old’s future at Hotspur Way is now at a crossroads – details of a recent meeting with Daniel Levy emerged.
But despite talk of Dier possibly leaving during the 2023 summer transfer window, he stayed put, with Tottenham-based journalist Gold sharing his thoughts on the player.
Dier in midfield
“Eric Dier doesn’t suit the Postecoglou system as well as he thinks he does,” said Gold. “He’s not got the pace for that high line. He is going to struggle when the balls are knocked over his head. He will have to adapt his game to it.
“I do wonder if there is a possibility if he ends up becoming a number six again. If there is an injury to Bissouma or Skipp as well.
“I know people are just going to hate on Eric Dier because they just don’t think he is good enough. Whether that is true or not. I think the injury did play a big part for him last season as well. Do I think he fits Postecglou’s system? No.”
Will Dier leave in January?
Given that Tottenham aren’t in Europe, then you have to question how Dier will get back into the first-team picture, even in midfield.
A few players entering the treatment room is the only answer. But if the £85k-a-week star (Spotrac) is still struggling come January, then you have to question how he stays.
Dier was playing for England last season and heading into Euro 2024, he isn’t even being considered by Gareth Southgate, so surely that will be on the player’s mind.
