Bowler tips Tanner to be ‘top player’

Josh Bowler believes Bluebirds winger Ollie Tanner will be “a great player for many years” after being wowed by him in his very first training session with the club.

Tanner is enjoying a breakthrough season in the first team, the highlight of which must be his stunner against Swansea in the South Wales derby victory earlier in the campaign, but has had to be patient in recent weeks, with Bowler playing in that right-wing position ahead of him.

But at 21, Tanner reminds Bowler of himself during his loan spell at Hull City in 2019/20. Admittedly, the Nottingham Forest loanee didn’t know a great deal about Tanner after arriving from the City Ground, but the young Bluebird made a lasting first impression on the training ground.

“I didn’t know much about him when I first came,” Bowler said. “But even in my first training sessions I remember watching him and thinking, ‘Wow this guy is good!’ You could just tell.

“He is only young and reminds me a lot of myself, especially of my tenure at Hull. He is top drawer and is only going to get better. He needs to stay confident and don’t let anything keep him down. I know he’s going to be a top player.

“We talk to each other a lot. We are obviously similar, so in training we are on different teams playing in the same position, so a friendly competition between me and him. He is similar to me so we talk about stuff, after a game what he can do better, what I can do better. I think he’s going to be a great player for many years.”
