Erol Bulut admits Cardiff City ‘have to do something in January transfer market’ to address growing issue

The Bluebirds boss spoke after the 1-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers

Erol Bulut believes Cardiff City have to do business in the January transfer window if he is to be able to field a more aggressive team to compete at the back end of the season.

The Bluebirds lost 1-0 away to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, with Joe Rankin-Costello’s strike the only thing separating the two sides. However, what will be concerning is that, after starting the season so free-scoring, the goals have dried up in recent weeks, which have coincided in a dip in results.

City have scored just one goal in three matches, and two in four, before injuries piled up regarding the top end of the pitch. Some supporters have made their opinions known on what they deem to be conservative team selection, by playing three naturally defensive midfielders ahead of a back four, but Bulut insists that, with the players he has at his disposal, this is his only option.

When asked if he thought that he simply didn’t have the personnel to start games on the attack, Bulut said: “If you play how we played the last 15, 20 minutes, with Rubin (Colwill) and Robbo (Callum Robinson) more offensively, you have a defensive risk. So, I have to decide as a coach if I go from the first minute like this or the last 20 or 30 minutes, when I need it. If I start like this, we see the opponents have good passing game and good movement, so we can be losing 3-0. I don’t want that.”

Asked if that was an area he would have to address in the January transfer window, he replied: “Until January we have to go with this squad. We will try and make the best. In January we have to do something in the transfer market, because we need it.”

The lack of goals has been a concern for Cardiff in recent weeks. Asked why he thought that was the case, Bulut replied: “The last few games, starting from Middlesbrough, it was nearly a game like what we had today. But there we had injuries, we missed players, there also their first goal, we don’t need to speak about that. And we had chances to lead in Middlesbrough. We have to finalise
