Ben Garner, manager of Colchester United, on Crewe Alexandra’s defeat
Ben Garner, the manager of Colchester United, thought it was a ‘travesty’ because his team lost 2-1 at Crewe Alexandra and left without any points.
Chris Long’s early brace put the U’s in a tough spot for the remainder of the game, but the U’s significantly improved in the last hour.
Early in the second half, Samson Tovide scored to give Colchester a lead they would not relinquish. Colchester was the superior team in the second half, with Chilvers, Joe Taylor, and Arthur Read all going close to tying the score.
However, the U’s were unable to add a second goal and suffered a heartbreaking loss at Mornflake Stadium.
The goal we gave up was pretty bad, according to Garner.
“We haven’t given up from a set piece all season, and then we failed to mark a man in our six-yard box.
“We won’t allow the worst goal of the season, after two touches in our six-yard box.
If I’m being completely honest, I thought the penalty was pretty light and that there wasn’t much contact.
“I think he’s just bought it by going down but after that, we were brilliant.
“We absolutely killed them, if I’m honest and how we’ve come away with nothing from the game is a travesty.
“The amount of chances we created, it was our best performance of the season for the 80 minutes after the penalty.
“We dominated the ball, we had purpose to our play, we created so many opportunities and restricted them to nothing.
“When we got the goal, I actually thought we’d go on and win the game and we couldn’t get the next goal.
“With the performances, to only take one point from the last two games is criminal really.
“But as long as we keep performing and keep hitting the right levels that turns.
“Sometimes, you can just have unlucky periods in football but if we keep performing like that, then we’re going to be in a good place.”
