‘Too painful’: Daniel Farke explains reason behind unexpected absence of Leeds ace on Wednesday night

Daniel Farke has confirmed Jamie Shackleton missed Leeds United’s win over QPR on Wednesday through injury.

Farke was speaking in his post-match press conference after Leeds’ 1-0 victory at Elland Road, in which Shackleton was unexpectedly not involved at all.

Shackleton had started each of Leeds’ last three Championship matches with Farke also confirming in his presser on Tuesday he had no fresh injury concerns heading into the game against QPR.

However, Luke Ayling was the man to replace him at right-back with Charlie Cresswell brought in on the bench to take Shackleton’s spot in the matchday squad.

Farke has spoken previously about Shackleton having some problems in his shoulder, though as of yet, it had not kept him out of any game.

Unfortunately, though, Shackleton is said to have picked up a knock to his shoulder in training on Tuesday, meaning it was too painful for him to have any involvement.

Farke said: “Yes. Sadly, he got a little knock on his shoulder yesterday in training and he had some problems with the shoulder before, it was too painful and too sore in order to be involved tonight, and that was the reason he was not with us today.”

Farke may have a little problem at left-back on Saturday if Shackleton is not recovered in time, based on what has been said about Sam Byram.

It is not yet certain whether Byram is at a level where he can play three matches in seven days and with such a short turnaround to Bristol City, it feels unlikely he starts.

With Junior Firpo already out, if Shackleton is not fit that could leave Farke with a real problem and potentially having to play someone vastly out of position.
