The Muskegon (Mich.) native spoke to 247Sports about his next move.

“Really my biggest thing I’m looking for at the next school is the opportunity to kind of show my entire skill set and continue my development,” he said. “I think I developed my all around skill set and there’s some things that also came naturally to me and so that’s led to me wanting to be somewhere I can move around more or play more of a traditional safety, or even go back to the other side of the ball.”

The other side of the ball is an intriguing possibility for Martinez who was a dynamic offensive player in high school as a quarterback and some schools recruited him as a receiver. He was a two-time Michigan High School Player of the Year.

“I’m open to any part of the country, just looking for best fit,” he said.

Martinez had 36 tackles, an interception (returned for a touchdown) and four pass break-ups in his Buckeye career.

He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

The transfer portal officially opens December 4th, and schools will be able to contact and offer Martinez and other FBS transfers then.

Rice quarterback JT Daniels will medically retire from football after suffering multiple concussions, according to Pete Thamel. Daniels’ college career saw him start at USC and attempt passes at Georgia and West Virginia before arriving at Rice this season. Thamel reported that doctors recommended that doctors advised Daniels to retire. Daniels now plans to become a coach.

A five-star recruit out of Santa Ana (Calif.) powerhouse Mater Dei, Daniels headed to USC as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback and No. 6 overall player in the 2018 class, the top-ranked player in California. He enrolled early, then won a quarter competition with Matt Fink and Jack Sears, becoming just the second true freshman quarterback in USC history to start a season opener. His first year was a bit up-and-down for a 5-7 team, with Daniels connecting on 216-of-363 passes for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Daniels again won a quarterback competition as a sophomore in 2019, but he suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the second quarter of the season opener. Kedon Slovis went on to start the rest of the season and had a high level of success, leading Daniels to enter the transfer portal.

Daniels transferred to Georgia and eventually won the starting job after Stetson Bennett suffered a shoulder injury, and he closed the season strong by completing 67.2% of his passes for 1,231 yards and 10 touchdowns with just two interceptions. That included a strong bowl game showing where Daniels threw for 392 yards and a touchdown against Cincinnati.

And that left Daniels as the frontrunner for Georgia’s starting job in 2021. But Daniels suffered an oblique injury early in the season and eventually yielded the job back to Bennett, who led Georgia to its first national championship since 1980. Bennett experienced his own bumps, including two interceptions in the SEC Championship Game loss to Alabama. But Georgia coach Kirby Smart expressed belief in Bennett afterwards, and he rewarded the Bulldogs by throwing for five touchdowns with no interceptions over the two College Football Playoff wins, then becoming a Heisman Trophy candidate in his final season as he led the Bulldogs to a repeat championship.

With Bennett established after winning the first title, Daniels went to the portal again, picking West Virginia. He played in 10 games with the Mountaineers, throwing for 2,107 yards and 13 touchdowns with nine interceptions, though he was benched partway through the season for Garrett Greene. That led to Daniels’ final transfer, to Rice. He played in nine games this year, completing 63.1% of his passes for 2,443 yards — the most yards Daniels threw for since his freshman year at USC — and a career-high in touchdown passes with 21.

For his career, spread across four schools, Daniels passes for 9,390 yards and 66 touchdowns to 32 interceptions.
