Could Houston Astros Pull Off Reunion with Catcher Through Trade?

The Houston Astros could use another catcher and the Minnesota Twins are shopping theirs. Could a trade be in the mix?

The Houston Astros will have a different look at the catcher’s position next season. Long-time and fan-favorite catcher Martin Maldonado is no longer with the team.

Instead, Yainer Diaz will be the club’s Opening Day catcher, much to the relief of many fans who were tired of former manager Dusty Baker continuing to favor Maldonado despite abysmal offensive numbers and declining defensive ability.

Still, Houston could do with another catcher to help backup Diaz or allow Diaz to DH on particular days.

One name on the trade block is that of Christian Vazquez, who is currently being shopped by the Minnesota Twins according to Robert Murray of FanSided.

Houston already traded for Vazquez once, that was back in August of 2022 when he made his way to the Astros via the Boston Red Sox in a trade. He then played a relatively minor role in helping Houston win their second World Series in franchise history.

Vazquez is currently earning $10 million a year and has two years left on his contract. He is known for his defense and his bat can be hot and cold. However, he has the ability to make a difference at the plate.

With how heavily he is being shopped, the Astros may be able to strike a deal if they are willing to take on the money.

He would compliment Diaz perfectly, especially with his glove. Vazquez could help alleviate any concerns about Diaz’s defense while adding some veteran leadership in the clubhouse.

It is an option worth exploring to help improve the roster at the margins.
