TRANSFER: Gustavo Hamer joins Sheffield United

Coventry City can confirm that Gustavo Hamer has joined Sheffield United.

The move follows the agreement of an undisclosed fee on Friday between the two clubs, after Gus informed the Club this week of his desire to join Sheffield United and with Gus entering the final year of his contract with Coventry City.

Gus joined the Sky Blues in 2020 from PEC Zwolle. The popular midfielder would go on to make a total of 132 appearances for the Club, scoring 19 goals – including in the run to the Championship Play-Offs last year where he was instrumental, netting the winner in the Semi-Final and scoring in the Final too.

Everyone at Coventry City would like to wish Gus the best of luck for the future, and we thank him for the huge contribution he has made to the Club during his time with us.

Coventry City manager Mark Robins today spoke about the future of star man Gustavo Hamer amid claims the Sky Blues have agreed a deal worth £15m to sell him to Sheffield United.

Robins has made it clear he wants to keep Hamer at the CBS Arena and admits the 26 year-old midfielder’s situation needs to be resolved quickly.

“There’s a lot of speculation around Gustavo at the moment and that’s something else that needs a resolution pretty quickly, one way or another,” he said.

“I would prefer to keep him, but obviously there are other factors that are involved in that, so let’s see what happens.”

 Coventry City have lost Viktor Gyokeres and are considering potential replacements such as Max Bird and Lewis Fiorini to bolster their squad.

Tim Iroegbunam and Hannibal Mejbri are also options for Coventry, with the club looking to secure a loan or permanent deal for either player.

Jayson Molumby could be an ideal replacement for Gustavo Hamer, bringing defensive solidity and hard work to the midfield while weakening West Brom financially.

While Hull have predominantly been the club in pursuit of the League One player, perhaps Coventry could consider hijacking the deal.

The 22-year-old has a lot of potential and could be a valuable asset in the years to come if he develops his game at a Championship level.

Coventry will want to target younger players that will retain a high resale value should they develop into top stars.

Fiorini could be a great example of this.

The 21-year-old has come through the academy system at Manchester City, which produced some exceptional midfield talent in recent years.

Injury hampered his time at Blackpool, as did the chaos behind the scenes that unfolded as the season wore on, but he could be really suited to Robins’ style of play if he made the switch to Coventry.

The Aston Villa youngster spent last season out on loan with QPR, where he made 32 appearances in a struggling side.

Taking the step-up to Coventry could be what’s needed for him to show what he is truly capable of.

While Villa may only sanction a loan move, it is also worth tempting them with a permanent offer as he could be a very smart long-term replacement for Hamer if he departs.
