Burnley and Holland man Weghorst joins Hoffenheim on loan

Burnley forward Wout Weghorst has joined German outfit TSG Hoffenheim on a season-long loan.

Weghorst joined the Clarets from Wolfsburg in January 2022 for a £12million fee.

The towering striker scored twice in 20 appearances at Turf Moor as the club was relegated to the Championship.

He joined Besiktas on loan the following summer but his loan in Turkey was cut short so he could head to Manchester United in the January window.

Weghorst played 31 times for Erik ten Hag’s side, scoring against Nottingham Forest and Real Betis in the Carabao Cup and Europa League respectively.

The forward’s last game for United was the FA Cup final against Manchester City on June 3.

He also represented the Netherlands at the World Cup in Qatar last year, scoring a brace against eventual winners Argentina in the quarter-final.

An official statement read: “Weghorst will now spend the 2023/24 campaign with Hoffenheim and the club would like to wish him all the best in Germany.”

Meanwhile, Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge is closing in on a move to Turf Moor ahead of the new season.

The 25-year-old became the Blades’ record signing in 2020 when he joined from Genk for a £22million fee.

Berge has scored 13 goals in 97 appearances for the Yorkshire club and is entering the final 12 months of his deal at Bramall Lane. He has also represented Norway 36 times at senior level.
