Ipswich Town: Leeds United sign new striker ahead of Portman Road trip

Leeds United look set to travel to Portman Road with a new striker after completing the signing of Joel Piroe last night.

The Whites have been working hard to sign competition for Patrick Bamford and Georginio Rutter this summer. The former is struggling with long-term injury issues while the latter is yet to score for the club after arriving from Hoffenheim for more than £35 million in January.

Piroe has been chosen as the man to come in, joining from Championship rivals Swansea City for £10 million. Their had been some interest from Leicester City, as well as a handful of sides in the Premier League, but Leeds managed to get the deal over the line.

The 24-year-old, who joind Swansea from PSV Eindhoven in 2021, has scored 41 goals in 88 Championship games. He finished as the fourth highest scorer last season, beaten only by Chuba Akpom, Viktor Gyokeres and Carlton Morris – all of whom are now playing outside the second tier.

He signed a four-year contract at Elland Road and has become Daniel Farke’s fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Ethan Ampadu, Sam Byram, Karl Darlow and Joe Rodon.

Despite his late transfer, Piroe is expected to be available for tomorrow’s trip to Portman Road, although it remains to be seen whether or not he’s brought in to face the Blues so soon after moving from South Wales
