Dream come true': Capel makes MLB debut after learning of call-up while golfing

Injuries & Moves: OF Capel gets Minor League deal

This page will be updated throughout the Reds’ offseason as new information on injuries and roster moves becomes available.

LATEST NEWS

Dec. 26: OF Conner Capel signed to a Minor League contract
The deal for Capel includes an invitation to big league camp at Spring Training. He spent most of 2023 with the A’s Triple-A club but played 32 games for Oakland and batted .260 with a .701 OPS.

Dec. 21: RHP Brooks Kriske signed to Minors deal with an invitation to Spring Training
The Reds added potential relief depth in the 29-year-old Kriske, who is named after Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson. The right-hander made four relief appearances in 2023 for Kansas City; he’s pitched for the Yankees, Orioles and Royals over parts of three big league seasons, producing an 11.22 ERA in 20 appearances.

Dec. 19: OF TJ Hopkins traded to Giants
The Reds will receive a player to be named later or cash for Hopkins, who hit .171 without a home run in 25 games as a rookie in 2023. He was designated for assignment by Cincinnati on Dec. 14.

Dec. 14: Signed catcher Austin Wynns to a one-year contract; designated OF TJ Hopkins for assignment
Wynns will earn $950,000 from his split contract in 2024 if he makes the big league club and $300,000 if he is at Triple-A Louisville. Cincinnati already has Tyler Stephenson and Luke Maile as catchers on the 40-man roster and former Cubs catcher P.J. Higgins coming to Spring Training as a non-roster invite on a Minor League deal.

The Reds carried three catchers on their 26-man active roster in Stephenson, Maile and Curt Casali in 2023, but the addition of Wynns doesn’t mean that will be the case next season.

“It’s catching depth. We don’t really have it in Triple-A,” Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall told MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon. “There’s a little bit of an insurance policy here.”

The 33-year-old Wynns spent last season with the Giants, Dodgers and Rockies and previously played for the Orioles. Over five big league seasons, he’s a career .226 hitter with 13 home runs. While not a big threat offensively, Wynns has been viewed as strong at game-calling and pitch-framing.

Dec. 1: Signed RHPs Emilio Pagán and Nick Martinez to two-year contracts
A reliever, Pagán will earn $16 million and can be used in multiple situations. Martinez’s deal is worth $26 million, and he will have a chance to compete for a rotation spot in spring after having a swing role with San Diego the past two seasons. Both pitchers have the ability to opt out of their deals after the 2024 season.
