Can the Philadelphia Phillies Actually Re-Sign Aaron Nola?
The Philadelphia Phillies have tough decisions to make during the MLB offseason. With reports that Rhys Hoskins will be gone, Aaron Nola’s looming extension, and other players needing to be added, Philadelphia needs to figure out what moves are the smartest for the future.
For what it’s worth, it’s tough to say that letting a pitcher like Nola walk. In his seven-year career, Nola owns an ERA of 3.72 and a FIP of 3.38. Those numbers were slightly better in the postseason, throwing 48.2 innings and posting an ERA of 3.70.
The question now for Philadelphia will be if they believe he’s worth the asking price. Some think that the price could be in the $200 million range. Only four pitchers have signed seven-year deals for $200 million, and they include four of the better pitchers of this generation.
Is Nola better than Stephen Strasburg, David Price, Clayton Kershaw, or Max Scherzer? Perhaps at times, but it’s tough to argue with the careers they all had.
