Former US men’s national team defender Alexi Lalas has been left unimpressed with Tyler Adams’ soon-to-be announced move to Bournemouth, despite the US captain being handed a a chance to keep playing in the Premier League, after his $25million (£20M) transfer to Chelsea fell through.
The Cherries triggered the defensive midfielder’s $25M (£20M) release clause on Monday in a bid to bring the 24-year-old to the Vitality Stadium before the summer transfer window shuts later this month, according to reports.
The American is believed to want out of Elland Road after Leeds‘ relegation to the Championship last season and appears to be keen on a move to England’s south coast, though Lalas isn’t a fan of the idea.
Chelsea were previously close to securing a deal with the Whites before the move collapsed over Adams’ ongoing injury issues despite the two clubs agreeing to a deal.
‘The latest on [Tyler Adams]… it looks like he might go to Bournemouth,’ said Fox Sports researcher David Mosse on Lalas’ State of the Union Podcast. ‘Ew…really?’ replied Lalas.
Ah, it’s a tad underwhelming but it’s still the Premier League. It’s a place where he’ll start presumably so I don’t think it’s too bad,’ said Mosse.
‘Yeah, I mean I’m glad he’s playing in the Premier League and I think he should be playing in the Premier League but if this was Bournemouth or even Chelsea, the way Chelsea is right now, it’s… meh.’
Mail Sport first revealed that Bournemouth were interested in signing Adams even with the USA international currently unable to play due to a hamstring injury.
Adams suffered the problem in the latter stages of last season after going down during a training session in March and was forced to undergo surgery to rectify the muscle issue.
He was tipped to move to West London before a move was deemed as one too many by owner Todd Boehly, especially due to Adams’ injury status, and deals for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia being so close at the time.
Caicedo and Lavia are now the latest two midfielders to join Chelsea in a British record $145M deal (£115M) and $73.7m (£58M), respectively.
