Diontae Johnson Officially Returns for Steelers

ThPITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have activated wide receiver Diontae Johnson off of Injured Reserve, bringing him back for the first time since Week 1.

Johnson has missed most of the season thus far due to a hamstring injury that landed him on IR. He returned to practice after the bye week and told reporters, “hell yeah” he was playing against the Los Angeles Rams. He’s now officially been activated and placed back on the 53-man roster.

To make room for Johnson, the Steelers have released veteran wideout/kick returner Gunner Olszewski. Olszewski signed a two-year deal with Pittsburgh last offseason, but has struggled with ball control throughout the first seven games, and some of last season.

The team also announced tight end Pat Freiermuth will be placed on IR, shutting him down for a minimum of four games. Freiermuth suffered a hamstring injury in Week 4 and planned to return this week against the Rams. After suffering a setback in practice, he’ll now be shut down for an extended time.
