Alex Neil's impending departure to Stoke City exposes fault lines at Sunderland - James Hunter - Chronicle Live

‘He didn’t’: Journalist shares why Wolves winger Chiquinho had his loan to Stoke cancelled

There was some drama towards the end of the January transfer window, with Chiquinho having his loan move to Stoke City cancelled – and now some more information has emerged about the situation.

Just over a month ago, Chiquinho was sent to the Championship, along with Ki-Jana Hoever.

Wolves officials were keen for Chiquinho to get out and play, after missing the whole of last season though injury.

But the star only made a handful of appearances, before dramatically having his loan terminated.

So, what happened?

Journalist Liam Keen has spoken about the situation on the latest Express & Star podcast…

Why did Chiquinho leave his loan spell at Stoke City?

Chiquinho, 23, will now be playing his football at Portuguese outfit Farmalicao this season.

Wolves have sent a number of players there on loan in recent years.

The move was arranged fairly quickly which is good.

But what happened with Chiquinho at Stoke? Well, journalist Liam Keen says the player did not see eye to eye with manager Alex Neil.

He said: “It’s quite a complicated thing for a club to cancel one loan. Obviously he had a recall (option) in January as well. Fortunately Stoke were fairly receptive to Wolves to make it happen.

“The long and short of it, really, is he didn’t see eye to eye with Alex Neil at Stoke. I might be being slightly harsh on Alex Neil because I’ve never had any experiences of him – I’m pure going based off perception here. But he feels like he’s probably not the easiest guy to work for particularly if you’re a young foreign guy who’s maybe not used to his style.

“But I can’t use that as an excuse for Chiquinho. If you’re not doing what you’re told or asked to do or you’re not putting in 100%, it’s quite poor for a young lad on his part. Something I didn’t really expect from him either, because all the indications I’ve had from him… he wouldn’t have done that.

“I think there probably is (fault on both sides). He didn’t see eye to eye with Neil. Wolves wanted to find a solution to it quickly.”

Keen added that there is now no chance for Chiquinho to be recalled by Wolves and players cannot play for three clubs in one season.

Chiquinho must put Stoke situation behind him quickly

It is important now for Chiquinho to put what happened at Stoke behind him.

It is a shame that it ended before it had even really started.

But sometimes things just don’t work out.

It would have been great for Chiquinho to experience playing in the Championship.

But the main thing is that he just builds momentum this season after his injury. Hopefully he’ll now do that at Farmalicao.
