Predicted Newcastle XI to face Man City: Howe makes 9 changes, £28m man left on the bench

From the Champions League to the Premier League and now the Carabao Cup, the fixtures just keep piling up for Newcastle United.

Next up for the Magpies is Manchester City, who head to St James’ Park in search of the one trophy they did not win last season.

Pep Guardiola’s side won the treble last year, but missed out on the Carabao Cup. That honour went to Manchester United, who beat Newcastle in the final at Wembley.

Getting to the final once again will be very tough for Eddie Howe‘s side, as they prepare to face a seemingly unstoppable Manchester City side on Wednesday night.

Howe is likely to make multiple changes, and this is the Newcastle lineup we expect to see against Man City

Tino Livramento starts, but no Lewis Hall against Man City

Howe added real depth to his Newcastle squad over the summer, and we expect him to use it on Wednesday night.

That should result in Tino Livramento starting for the first time. He should take the place of Kieran Trippier at right-back, with the 33-year-old deserving a rest after some incredible performances.

Toon fans will be eager to see Lewis Hall on the opposite flank, but he might have to settle for minutes off the bench. Instead of the £28million man, we think Howe will go with Matt Targett at left-back.

His return will allow Dan Burn to play at centre-back, giving Sven Botman a rest after injury. Burn should be joined by Jamaal Lascelles, who is yet to start this season.

First senior Newcastle start for Lewis Miley

With Newcastle still without Joelinton and Joe Willock, Howe’s midfield options are slightly depleted at this moment in time.

Therefore, he may see the Man City game as a chance to give Lewis Miley his first ever senior start. It was stated at the start of the season that Howe planned to use Miley in the Carabao Cup, and hopefully that proves to be the case.

The 17-year-old was exceptional during pre-season, and deserves an opportunity to start on Wednesday night.

We anticipate that he will be joined by Sean Longstaff and Sandro Tonali.

Anthony Gordon to continue his good form

Anthony Gordon was Newcastle’s man of the match against Sheffield United, and he will be keen to maintain his momentum in the Carabao Cup.

That will hopefully result in him starting on the left, with Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy joining him in attack as Howe makes nine changes to the XI that started at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

Predicted XI vs Man City: Dubravka; Livramento, Lascelles, Burn, Targett; Longstaff, Tonali, Miley; Murphy, Isak, Gordon.
