Millwall and Met Police respond after supporter arrested for alleged racial abuse following Hull City draw

Both clubs have confirmed a report of abuse was made during the 2-2 draw in South London

Millwall have issued a statement of their own after a fan was arrested at The Den on Saturday after a report of alleged racist abuse aimed at a Hull City player.

The player, who City have not named, is understood to have been abused during the first half of the pulsating 2-2 draw with it being reported by the Tigers man to club staff, who then made a formal complaint to Millwall.

A person has been arrested amid an investigation involving the Met Police, with the Lions slamming the actions of a supporter. “Millwall Football Club regrets to confirm an incident of alleged discriminatory abuse during Saturday’s match against Hull City,” the Lions said in a statement. “The club is working with the Metropolitan Police, its security staff, and Hull City as part of an ongoing investigation into the matter. A supporter has been arrested and will be subject to further police investigations.

“Millwall Football Club has a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination of all kinds at the club and it will continue to work tirelessly to eradicate it from the sport. For more information on the club’s work in this area, please click here.”

City, meanwhile, previously explained: “Hull City are appalled to learn of an incident of alleged discriminatory abuse towards one of our players during Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship fixture against Millwall. A home supporter has been identified and arrested and we would like to thank Millwall for their swift actions.

“The welfare of our players and staff is of the upmost importance and we will work with the EFL, Millwall and the Metropolitan Police to investigate the matter further. We have a zero-tolerance position on discrimination and will continue to support those tackling abuse in all forms.”

In a statement provided to Hull Live, the Met added: “Police have arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence directed towards a player during the Millwall v Hull City football match on Saturday, 7 October. The man has been taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody. Officers are working with both clubs to investigate the incident.”

Liam Rosenior’s men had fallen behind to a Duncan Watmore goal early on before Jaden Philogene and Adama Traore turned the game on its head, only for Joe Bryan to level it up in the second half.
