‘HE’S PROUD’: JURGEN KLINSMANN SHARES HOW TOTTENHAM STAR IS FEELING UNDER POSTECOGLOU
Former Tottenham Hotspur player Jurgen Klinsmann says Son Heung-min feels proud after being named captain of his old club.
Son Heung-min, who is now working with Klinsmann in the South Korea national team set-up, was recently named as Tottenham skipper by Ange Postecoglou.
Discussing the forward on ESPN, the World Cup winner said: “He was now awarded with the captain’s armband, which is a very special treat. It’s a very special award basically for him, as a foreign player, to be captain of Tottenham Hotspur.
“It’s very meaningful and he’s proud of that.”
With Hugo Lloris no longer in the first-team picture and Harry Kane departing for Bayern Munich, Postecoglou needed to find a new skipper for the 2023/24 campaign.
Ange Postecoglou made the right choice
It is not often that you see a forward with the captain’s armband but, even so, Son was the ideal candidate to succeed Lloris.
Leading his side out is not something that is new to the 31-year-old, who is currently the skipper of South Korea.
Son also knows Tottenham really well, joining the north London club back in 2015, and has been extremely loyal to them. All in all, with Kane leaving, he was the logical choice for the armband.
Postecoglou will now be hoping that this added responsibility can help the former Bayer Leverkusen man to raise his game.
He was not at his best last term, finishing the season with 10 goals in 36 Premier League outings. The campaign prior, he registered 23 in 35.
If Son can get back to that level again, then Tottenham may have a chance of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League. If not, then Postecoglou’s first year in England is unlikely to go well, as Spurs do not have too many other goalscorers in their squad right now.
