San Antonio Spurs’ Doug McDermott Talks ‘Embarrassing’ Loss to Indiana Pacers
San Antonio Spurs veteran Doug McDermott had a season-best scoring night on Monday against his former team, but the “embarrassing” 152-111 loss to the Indiana Pacers definitely made it hard to focus on any positives.
McDermott didn’t hold back when asked about the blowout afterwards.
“We need to learn from this one,” McDermott said. “It’s tough to flush these ones … it’s embarrassing to get beat like that and not being able to get a stop. We didn’t come out with enough energy tonight. That [falls] on all of us.”
McDermott finished with a team-high 17 points on 5 of 9 shooting to go along with four assists. He hit four of the team’s eight made 3s, as the Spurs went 8 of 26 from deep.
With an 86-61 lead at halftime, Indiana tied a franchise record for most points in a first half. The Pacers led by as many as 44 It was complete domination against a Spurs that was looking right down the hole to a potential
But the script has flipped quickly, and the young roster is learning on the fly. McDermott, 31, is the oldest player on the team and is by default given the veteran label. However, as a key piece of this development process, it’s clear McDermott is keen on making sure to speak out on behalf of the team after a loss as brutal as Monday’s.
The Spurs will have no choice but to lick their wounds and wipe the blood off as they prepare for Wednesday’s meeting at Madison Square Garden against a talented New York Knicks squad that’s looking to stake their claim in the Eastern Conference
