NEWCASTLE COULD BID FOR MIDFIELDER MANCHESTER UNITED SOLD FOR £8.72M
Newcastle United are on the hunt for a replacement for Sandro Tonali, and one of the midfielders linked with Eddie Howe’s side is former Manchester United player Fred.
According to BBC Sport, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been banned by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for breaching betting rules.
Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in the summer of 2023, has reportedly been handed a 10-month ban.
Newcastle United linked with former Manchester United midfielder Fred
According to Fotomaç, Newcastle are looking at former Manchester United midfielder Fred as a potential replacement for Tonali.
The report in the Turkish news outlet has claimed that Fred’s club Fenerbahce value him at €20 million (£17.45 million).
Newcastle could reportedly make a bid for Fred in January.
Manchester United sold Fred to Fenerbahce in the summer transfer window for an initial fee of €10 million (£8.72 million), as reported by The Manchester Evening News.
My View: Newcastle United should not sign Fred
In my opinion, Newcastle United should not bid for Fred in the January transfer window.
Yes, Newcastle need to find a replacement for Sandro Tonali, but I believe that the Magpies should aim for someone better than Fred.
Fred is 30 now and is not going to get any better.
Although the midfielder played well in spells at Manchester United, he was not one of the best players in English football during his time in the Premier League.
Fred made 139 appearances in the Premier League.
The 30-year-old Brazil international midfielder scored eight goals and gave seven assists in those games.
It is only the end of October.
I think that Newcastle have enough time to find a suitable replacement for Tonali.
Newcastle are aiming to finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season.
The Magpies are also looking to progress to the latter rounds of the UEFA Champions League.
