Favorite to replace fired former Everton star is a former Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, and Newcastle United player.
A former player for Birmingham City and Tottenham Hotspur is expected to land his first managerial position.
The odds-on favorite to become the next manager of Oldham are now Stephen Clemence, a former midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur, Birmingham City, and Leicester City.
Following a seven-game losing streak that put the National League club at the bottom of the division, David Unsworth was fired by the club on Sunday. Unsworth was a former player for Everton.
Unsworth had led Oldham to 12th place in the previous campaign, but after just one victory in nine games this time around, the club fired him.
According to a statement from the team, David Unsworth has left Oldham Athletic after serving as the first-team manager for a year.
“Unfortunately, the start of the current season has fallen short of the club’s hopes after a successful finish to the 2022–2023 season, a substantial investment in the playing budget, and several extremely promising signings during the summer.
“Since the Rothwell family acquired ownership of Oldham Athletic in July 2022, one of their guiding philosophies has been to refrain from managing the club’s day-to-day football operations while ensuring stability for the club’s long-term existence.
“David signed for three seasons to bring stability to the playing front, but despite David and his coaching staff’s diligence and hard work, results have not been successful on the field.
“The board wishes David and John Ebbrell, his assistant, all the best as they move forward with their club management careers. Unfortunately, things did not turn out as well as we had all hoped in this particular case.
The team can announce that Steve Thompson will oversee first-team matters in the meantime until a hiring procedure is carried out.
Clemence is now in the middle of the hiring process and is expected to be appointed in half. Before retiring due to injury in 2010, the 45-year-old played for Tottenham, Birmingham, and Leicester for stretches.
After hanging up his boots, he transitioned into coaching, initially joining Steve Bruce’s team at Sunderland. He joined Hull City in 2012 as the Under-21s coach before transitioning to the club’s top team under Bruce. Later, he was appointed East Yorkshire’s assistant coach.
He moved to Sheffield Wednesday in January 2019 after going with Bruce to Aston Villa in 2016. Prior to Bruce’s official arrival in South Yorkshire on February 1st, Clemence served as the Owls’ first-team coach after the Owls announced his employment in January.
Agnew moved with Bruce to Newcastle United and thereafter to West Brom, where Bruce was fired 11 months ago.
