Former Oxford United winger Yanic Wildschut could make his return to the Kassam Stadium this afternoon (September 23) after joining today’s opponents Exeter City.
Last Friday, September 15, Wildschut signed a contract with his new team before making his debut the following day in Exeter’s 1-0 Sky Bet League One victory over Cheltenham.
After an injury derailed his debut season with the team, the 31-year-old parted ways with the U’s by mutual consent in the summer.
In July 2022, the Dutchman made a two-year commitment to the team from Bulgarian club CSKA Sofia for an unknown sum.
He missed five months of the previous season due to a hamstring injury sustained in preseason, although he went on to make 24 appearances across all competitions and scored one.
In January, he scored just once, helping his team defeat Ipswich Town 2-1 at home.
Liam Manning, the head coach of the U’s, expressed his appreciation for the Dutch player receiving another chance before wishing him success in today’s match against Exeter.
Manning, the U’s head coach, said: “I’m glad Yanick got back in and got a chance. I can’t say enough good things about the man.
“How he was great, I had an extremely open discussion with him about what his job looked like with us in the summer.
“I can’t express how much credit I give him for those conversations; hopefully, that will be reflected in how we manage.
“I wish him the best after Saturday,” I say, “knowing that we treated him right and in the right way.”
