A Champions League team is interested in Southampton’s £12 million star.

Newcastle United is one of the clubs showing interest in Southampton striker Carlos Alcaraz ahead of the January transfer window, according to talkSPORT.

The Argentine midfielder moved from Racing Club to the Saints in January of last year for a rumored £12 million transfer price. His former side attested that the transfer agreement had a 15% sell-on provision in the event of a future sale.

Alcaraz developed into a key member of the team during the club’s tumultuous final few months of the previous campaign, which regrettably resulted in relegation back to the Championship.

The 20-year-old has made seven appearances for the Saints in all competitions this season, but under new head coach Russell Martin, he has found it difficult to maintain a starting position. As a result, numerous clubs have been monitoring the circumstance.

Although a deal never materialized, TalkSPORT is saying that Newcastle United asked Southampton about Alcaraz’s availability during the summer transfer window since Eddie Howe is rumored to be a huge fan of the crafty midfielder.

Although his starts at the St. Mary’s Stadium were few under the former Swansea City manager, the Magpies plan to reaffirm their interest once the window reopens.

The Sun reported in the summer that Southampton were asking for £25 million for Alcaraz and that RB Leipzig of the Bundesliga and Portuguese powerhouse Benfica were both interested in signing him, but no agreement was ever reached.

In the upcoming months, Newcastle might help Alcaraz return to the Premier League, but they might have to meet the Saints’ asking price.

Alcaraz is a skilled midfielder who was one of Southampton’s best performers last season, despite the team’s ultimately disastrous South Coast campaign.

A move to St. James’ Park, though, might be the answer to Alcaraz’s game-time problems since Martin doesn’t appear to be the biggest fan of the former Racing Club player.
