Walsall could be set to miss out on one of their top transfer targets. According to recent media reports, Walsall’s League Two rivals Colchester United are in talks with Mansfield Town over the transfer of striker Danny Johnson. Johnson, who has scored thirteen goals over twenty-eight first-team Saddlers appearances, is on loan in WS1 until around 15th January with his recent form alerting several clubs to his availability. First reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Walsall, who are believed to have been working with the Stags over a potential deal, face competition from the U’s, with several social media
accounts suggesting a deal between Mansfield and Colchester has already been agreed. Walsall were close to landing Johnson on a permanent deal in the summer before interference from the Mansfield boardroom saw the deal turned into a short-term loan. Saddlers co-chairman Ben Boycott recently confirmed that he had visited the Black Country in a bid to thrash out his and Michael Flynn’s plans for the Transfer Window, with Johnson believed to be at the top of the shopping list.
