The Premier League’s ‘closest’ team to signing was Fulham desired a strong transfer
In Sporting’s first five games of the season, Viktor Gyökeres has three goals and one assist.
It comes after the striker’s 22 goals and 12 assists in 50 games for Coventry City the previous season. The Premier League was the logical choice because he wanted to go during the summer transfer window.
According to A Bola, Fulham came “closest” to signing him, and many in Portuguese football are surprised that the 25-year-old isn’t already playing in the first division of English football.
Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting, has revealed why Fulham, despite their best efforts, and Marco Silva’s apparent desire to beat his old club to the deal, stood little chance.
Gyökeres played a key role in the team’s 3-0 victory over Moreirense over the weekend, and Amorim was questioned about if English teams were “sleeping” throughout the summer.
Not everyone was dozing off, according to a Bola remark from him: “He truly wanted to come to Sporting. We saw the proposals, which [Hugo] Viana demonstrated to me. He was aware of the concept, was a very ambitious player, and his current Premier League teams were probably not where he wanted to play.
