Lincoln City Defender Linked With Championship Move

Lincoln City right back Lasse Sorensen is being hunted by unnamed Championship clubs, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.

The Danish defender has been in superb form for Mark Kennedy’s side, who are unbeaten in League One since the opening day of the season. The 23-year-old is a popular figure among Lincoln City supporters and is currently in his third season with the club.

Sørensen joined the Imps on a long-term deal in July 2021, following a three-year spell as a professional with Stoke City. Originally signed as a central midfielder, he was in and out of the Imps team under former manager Michael Appleton. However, earlier this year, he was used as a makeshift right wing-back following injuries at the club and has not looked back.

He made headlines in March when he scored against Wycombe from the halfway line, winning the club’s Goal of the Season award, and he’s gone on to become a key player for Mark Kennedy. He is a former youth international with Denmark, appearing 24 times between the Under 16s and Under 20s.

He began his career with Esbjerg fB in his home country but caught the eye of Stoke City, who moved for him in 2016. He impressed Paul Lambert enough to be handed a Premier League debut in May 2018, coming on as a substitute against Swansea City. Following seven more league appearances for Stoke in the Championship, he spent time on loan with MK Dons before his move to the Imps.

It now seems he could be a target for Championship clubs, although Witcoop is sketchy about the details of who might be looking at Sorensen.

It’s believed he is out of contract this summer and could potentially be available on a free transfer come the end of the season, which could appeal to a number of clubs in the second tier that are cash-strapped but looking for players capable of taking them to the next level.

And so it begins. Unnamed clubs, ambiguous language, and players coming to the end of their contracts are perfect for journalists wishing to keep their social media engagement up during the quiet period of September and October.

Sorensen is a good pick for such rumours, but it is a credit to him and Lincoln City that his name is being mentioned in such unspecific tweets. The Dane was out in the cold for long periods last season, playing second fiddle in the midfield to Matty Virtue, Max Sanders and Ted Bishop. His move to right back has been a massive success, and he’s one of the first names on the Imps teamsheet.

Sorensen is a hugely popular figure with the fans, a likeable, down-to-earth character who is unlikely to have his head turned by such random speculation. Lincoln City fans shouldn’t begin to worry about this right now; they should be proud that one of their players is already being spoken about; it means the club are doing something right.
