The head of recruitment at Aston Villa discusses why they chose to transfer Jaden Philogene to Hull City.

Jaden Philogene, 21, was sold to the ambitious Championship club with a buy-back clause inserted into the deal and was one of a number of young talents who left Villa Park in the summer transfer window. The £5 million transfer from Aston Villa to Hull City during the closing stages of the transfer window did not sit well with supporters of the Premier League, with Villa fans unhappy at a young talent being sold despite regularly playing for Unai Emery’s side in pre-season.
However, the club’s transfer chief Ramón Rodrguez Verdejo, often known as Monchi, claims that those deals were required since offloading players like Philogene, Cameron Archer, and Aaron Ramsey assisted the team’s financial fair play (FFP) situation.
While Ramsey and Archer joined Premier League newcomers Burnley and Sheffield United, respectively, and Philogene moved to the MKM Stadium and signed a three-year contract with the option of a fourth, other sales and the signings of Philogene and Archer contributed to an overall revenue of about £40 million.
The Spaniard told the Villa website, “It has been a very difficult and labor-intensive summer, but I think we should be satisfied with what we have done, since we have kept all the important players plus the arrival of the five. “The sales have primarily been used to balance our FFP, but since we often have repurchase options, I believe we are covered.
“I am pleased with the work we have done, and I want to thank everyone who was involved, especially Sharon and Damian, as well as the entire communications department and player care department,” said the author.
