The Mecole Hardman trade may not be Joe Douglas’ last this season.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the New York Jets have two veterans available in trade talks as the Oct. 31 deadline approaches.
The New York Jets have made it known that pass rusher Carl Lawson is available. It’s been a slow start for him in New York, and his contract makes him an attractive trade option. Running back Dalvin Cook is also available, as his usage on this team has been decreasing.
Lawson signed with the Jets on a three-year, $45 million deal, with $30 million guaranteed, heading into the 2021 season, one that he spent on the sidelines because of an Achilles injury. The 28-year-old restructured the final season of his deal in May to earn a base salary of $9 million ($8 million guaranteed) with $3 million in incentives.
On such a stout defense, Lawson’s playing time has plummeted from 58% of the defensive snaps in 2022 to 24% of the defensive snaps in 2023. Additionally, his production has dipped from seven sacks to none (with three tackles) this season in four games. In his six seasons, the edge rusher has 27 sacks.
Lawson has been inactive in two games this season, receiving 30% of the defensive snaps in the Jets’ win against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6.
“I don’t know anything about that, I’m just focused on the next game and competing. I’m not really focused on any of that other stuff,” Lawson told The New York Post before Week 6. “They told me I was inactive, and that’s it. I was inactive, and I’m glad my team got the win. Jets got a win, man, so nothing else to think about.”

Cook has been met with a similar fate. After signing a one-year deal worth up to $8.6 million in the offseason with the hopes of establishing himself as more of a 1B option to Breece Hall upon the second-year standout’s return from a torn ACL, Cook’s usage has dipped to 27% of the snaps. On the season, Cook has 39 rushes for 109 yards and nine receptions for 46 yards — with no touchdowns.
The 28-year-old’s usage dropped to a season-low nine offensive snaps (14%) in Week 6. In his career, Cook has 6,102 rushing yards and 47 rushing TDs.
