Report: Packers’ Darnell Savage could go on IR with calf injury

On Monday, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur didn’t give any injury updates on the players who were forced out of action versus the Denver Broncos, but ESPN’s Rob Demovsky has a scoop on the status of starting safety Darnell Savage. Savage, who has previously dealt with his calf injury this season, will apparently miss multiple weeks — according to Demovsky’s reporting — and a stint on injured reserve, which would cost Savage at least four weeks of action, is apparently on the table, too.

Anthony Johnson Jr., a rookie seventh-round pick, initially replaced Savage in the lineup on Sunday, but he was soon displaced by Jonathan Owens — the husband of gymnast Simone Biles and a special teams contributor. If Savage can’t go, the assumption is that Owens will take over in his place. Owens started every game for the Houston Texans last year, with mixed results.

Savage has been playing some relatively good ball this season, a bounceback from the 2022 campaign in which he was benched for a short period of time. The former first-round pick is in a contract year with the team, so the last thing that he wants to do is miss an opportunity for playing time right now.
