NEWS FLASH: Wrexham AFC’s incredible goal machine says it was satisfying to get revenge on Grimsby.

Wrexham: The top players behind their 2022/23 FA Cup run

Grimsby was a difficult play-off opponent, but Wrexham triumphed on Saturday.

OLLIE PALMER was pleased to exact some revenge on Grimsby Town but the striker knows there will be teams eager to get once over on Wrexham this season.

At the conclusion of the 2021–22 season, Phil Parkinson’s team lost a devastating 5–4 decision to the Mariners in the National League play–off semifinal.

Wrexham overcame that setback last season by winning automatic promotion and making a 15-year comeback to the Football League. On Saturday, the Reds continued their impressive run of success by defeating Grimsby 3-0 at The STóK Cae Ras.

Although the play-off loss was difficult to accept, Palmer is only focused with the present moment.

“You’d be lying if you said you don’t remember those games because they hurt,” the frontman remarked.

“Getting one back is always nice, but football is football. Although you don’t forget it, you do lay it to rest and continue.

“I am sure some teams feel like that with us. I am sure Notts County will feel like that and when they play us, they will want to show that they are a better team but hopefully we will show them that we are the better team.

“It is competition but that is the industry we are in.

“We have got a job to do and this game against Grimsby was now more important than what that game was 18 months ago.”

Palmer was delighted with the display as Wrexham dominated against the Mariners from start to finish, with the comfortable victory extending the unbeaten record to seven League Two games and taking the Reds up to fourth in the table.

“It was probably the most complete performance of the season,” said Palmer.

“I think we have been a little bit unfortunate in previous games where maybe teams have had fours shots and scored four goals.

“But there have been some really promising performances and that was one of them.

“It is great to have such a commanding performance.

“Grimsby are a good team, they were only two points behind us before the game, and it was a good, all-round team performance.

“A clean sheet and three good goals.”

Palmer opened the scoring, finding the back of the net with a header from Elliot Lee’s cross to register his second goal of the campaign.

“It is always pleasing to score,” he said.

“As a forward you want to score goals but I think I try to bring a little bit more to the team than just a goal or two.”

Palmer was reunited in attack with star striker Paul Mullin who made his first start of the season after suffering a collapsed lung and four broken ribs during the club’s pre-season tour of the USA.

Mullin became the fifth different striker partner of the season for Palmer who has also had Sam Dalby, Billy Waters, Jake Bickerstaff and Steven Fletcher up front with him.

“It is good to have my scouse mate back!” added Mullin.

“We have scored plenty of goals this season already but he is a player we will always miss and it is good to be playing with my partner in crime.”
