QPR red card overturned ahead of Blackburn Rovers clash

QPR goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is available to face Rovers this weekend after his red card against Leeds in midweek was successfully appealed.

Saturday’s opponents lost 1-0 at Elland Road and finished the match with 10 men after Begovic was sent off. The Rs were already losing at that stage but the dismissal made their task even harder.

Replays suggested the goalkeeper made minimal, if any, contact with Patrick Bamford, who went to ground under the challenge. A claim of wrongful dismissal has now been upheld by an independent regulatory commission.

After the game, Ainsworth said: “For the life of me, I can’t see why Asmir has been sent off. He hasn’t touched him. I don’t want to go on about referees but we are not getting the rub of the green.

“Asmir is devastated. He said he did not touch him, we have watched the video replay and he didn’t touch him.

“Patrick Bamford said to me afterwards that Asmir didn’t touch him but he had to jump out of the way because he thought he was going to connect with him.

“I would kick myself if I didn’t look at appealing it. He hasn’t touched him and, as far as I remember, if you don’t make contact then there isn’t any possibility of a foul.

“We have had it rough with decisions but it will change. We need to get these boys recovered but we will put a strong team out against Blackburn.”

QPR have won only one of their last 19 Championship matches at Loftus Road and sit in the relegation zone. Rovers have lost their last four league games but beat QPR on Ainsworth’s first match in charge back in March.
