Former Baltimore Orioles Reliever Signs Deal With NL East Team
With the Baltimore Orioles looking for arms to add this offseason in both their starting rotation and bullpen, all options are on the table about how they will achieve this goal.
Trades seem more likely than free agency considering their plethora of top prospects that could land them a prized arm. However, the past few seasons has also seen the Orioles sign some under the radar pitchers.
They could have reunited with one of their former relievers this offseason after Cole Sulser elected to hit free agency, but the right-hander decided to sign a minor league deal with the New York Mets.
Sulser had his best Major League season with Baltimore during the 2021 season.
He recorded an ERA of 2.70 across 60 appearances and struck out 73 batters in 63 1/3 innings pitched.
Instead of keeping him in the mix with multiple years of club control left, the Orioles traded him to the Miami Marlins before the start of the 2022 season. In return, they got back two minor league players, a draft pick and a player to be named later who was also a minor leaguer.
Since leaving Baltimore, Sulser has struggled.
He posted a 1-4 record and ERA of 5.29 across 39 appearances with the Marlins in 2022. That caused them to designate him for assignment where he was claimed by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
A right shoulder strain only allowed him to pitch in four games in 2023 and he was once again DFA’d.
This allowed the Mets to swoop in and sign Sulser to a minor league contract with the opportunity for him to earn a Major League roster spot for the upcoming season.
