What Enzo Maresca told Leicester City squad on first day as manager admits to ‘wrong decisions’

The City boss still remembers the first thing he told his squad back in July because it’s a message he repeats regularly, even as his team flies high at the top of the Championship

Enzo Maresca regularly tells his Leicester City squad they will make mistakes – and admits he is not exempt from “wrong decisions”.

In his maiden address back in July, Maresca told his players not to be concerned with errors in games, and it’s a message he still repeats often. But it’s not just the City squad who might mess up. The Italian also says he will get his team selection wrong from time to time too.

Despite Maresca’s message, City have made very few mistakes on the ball in their attempts to control possession and build from the back, with Mads Hermansen’s ill-advised pass to Harry Winks at Blackburn the most obvious error so far. City recovered to win 4-1.

Still, Maresca gives regular reminders to his players that mistakes are part of the game. The plan is that it does not affect their mindset and cause them to wobble.

Asked if he could recall his very first message to his players, Maresca said: “I remember perfectly because I repeat it: do what we have to do and don’t worry if there are any mistakes. This is something I made at the beginning.

“It doesn’t matter if we make mistakes because mistakes are part of the process. We’re going to make mistakes in the following games for sure. But it’s the way we believe and we’re going to continue in tha

And those mistakes are not exclusive to the players. With a big squad to choose from and only 11 able to start each match, Maresca has admitted that he sometimes won’t get his selection choices right.
